Historic French frigate L’Hermione docks in Portimão

The famous frigate L’Hermione, a perfect replica of the ship of the Marquis de Lafayette of eighteenth-century France, arrived in Portimão yesterday morning. The large and impressive ship was received in the waters of the Algarve by about 30 local, private and tourist vessels, and docked in the port of the city, where it will remain until May 10.

It was the first time the ship had stopped at a Portuguese port, and it was a real public event. French residents in the Algarve were able to appreciate a little of the culture of their country, in a show organized by the Algarve delegation of the Union des Français de l’Étranger (UFE Algarve), the municipality of Portimão and others.

The show brought the French and Portimonese community to a historical view, and during the three days that L’Hermione will be in Portimão, thematic activities, excursions and spectacles will take place on board.

The construction of the replica of the frigate L’Hermione began in the 90’s, by an idealization of French and Americans. Since 2014, L’Hermione have traveled the world, from America and all over the Mediterranean, preserving French culture wherever it goes. The original ship belonged to the Marquis de Lafayette, a French commander who supported the United States in its war for independence in 1778.

L’Hermione will depart from Portimão on the 10th and will continue its journey towards Pasaia, Spain, where it will be from 17 to 21 May. Afterwards, the frigate will finish its trip in Bordeaux, returning finally to French soil, where it will stay until the end of the summer. The future routes of L’Hermione, as well as there will be stops on Portuguese soil, will be announced at the end of the year.
