From Split: Full-Day Tour To Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the greatest natural wonders of Europe. On 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. Let us take you on the journey through history and unique nature.

The tour starts at 08:00 and lasts for 12 hours. Our English-speaking guide will welcome you and show you to your transportation. While on the road you will have the chance to see famous Croatian landscape and our guide will tell you interesting facts about Croatian customs and cultural heritage.

When you reach your destination our guide will take you to buy the tickets. Included in the ticket price is an electrical train and a boat ride that take you around the park. Entering the park you will be provided with all the important information and a map.

There are two entrances to the National Park (Upper and Lower Lakes). On the panoramic map these are marked 1 and 2. Big notice boards at each entrance provide visitors with basic information concerning walking trails through the Park and the locations of viewpoints, car parks, hotels, post office, bus stops, first-aid posts, etc. The trails are also marked on the tickets that visitors buy when entering.

From then on you will have 5 hours of free time to explore sixteen beautiful lakes of crystal blue-green water and hypnotic cascades. You have 7 different routes to tour the lakes. If you decide on going hiking you can choose between 4 hiking trails. Plitvice lakes are a whole year sensation, especially in winter time covered in snow. They truly resemble a winter wonderland.

You can relax in the shade or explore the results of the process called sedimentation of calcium carbonate and the work of special kinds of algae and moss, tufa or travertine has been deposited, and is still deposited to form the natural dams that separate the lakes. Since the process is going on today, just as it always has, new travertine barriers, curtains, stalactites, channels and cascades are being built and the existing ones are changing.

As it is deposited, the tufa coasts the beds and banks of the lakes, giving the water sparkling beauty and petrifying trees and stones which fall into the lakes. The water keeps breaking through the travertine barriers at different places, so that the entire process of formation of lakes and dams is alive and very dynamic.

This is, in fact, a continuous dynamic process of tufa formation, a unique, interesting natural phenomenon. Nature’s construction work continues in undisturbed ecological conditions. Besides the lakes there are some interesting caves in which remains of prehistoric settlements have been found.

Around 17:00 we had back to Split and at 20:00 we are there. For the trip we recommend you to wear one piece of warm clothes (it is cooler there than in Split), appropriate footwear and sunscreen just in case.
