The hills of Vila de Frades were also the place chosen in Antiquity by a wealthy Roman from Pax Iulia, now known as Beja, to build his villa, which was later named after São Cucufate, the martyred Spanish saint Cucaphas. This is the oldest known winery on the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Visit the Roman ruins of São Cucufate, which were the source of inspiration for the bold decisions taken when building the Quetzal Winery, which embodies the parallels between the ancient and the modern and incorporates the wealth of what we have learned from the Romans.
