Cuando piensas en el Algarve, los castillos medievales no son lo primero que se te viene a la mente. Pero el Algarve tiene varios castillos, uno de los cuales se encuentra en Silves.

Se cree que fue construido durante los romanos o el período visigodo, pero no fue hasta la ocupación árabe del Algarve que el castillo de Silves realmente se convirtió en la impresionante fortaleza que se ve hoy en día. Este período duró desde aproximadamente el 8 hasta el siglo 12 o 13.

Este castillo es definitivamente uno de los ejemplos mejor conservados de castillos moriscos en Portugal. Hay otros castillos en el Algarve que puedes visitar, como el Castillo de Aljezur y el Castillo de Tavira, pero Silves tiende a ser un mejor ejemplo de la época. Si le interesa la historia y, en particular, la historia de Portugal, entonces una visita al Castillo de Silves es una visita obligada, especialmente si se hospeda en el Algarve Central.
