Situado en el medio del Atlántico, a 1.369 km al oeste de la parte continental de Europa, el archipiélago de las Azores comprende nueve islas repartidas en tres grupos. Los volcanes que dieron origen a estas islas también crearon islotes más pequeños, ubicados justo frente a la costa de los principales. Probablemente la más famosa de estas pequeñas formaciones es el islote de Vila Franca do Campo, ubicado a unos 500 metros de la costa de la isla de São Miguel, la isla más grande y poblada del archipiélago. Lleva el nombre de la ciudad de Vila Franca do Campo, la antigua capital de São Miguel, que se encuentra frente al islote.

El islote de Vila Franca do Campo está formado por el cráter de un antiguo volcán submarino. El islote que ahora se clasifica como reserva natural es una de las principales atracciones turísticas de São Miguel, especialmente desde que se celebró un evento en el campeonato mundial Red Bull Cliff Diving.
