After the conquest of Lisbon, the muslim community of Lisbon, was confined to live outside of the city walls, in the ghetto, that was the morería. However, centuries of coexistence and intermixing with other communities, like christian and jewish, has made this neighborhood represents, in its fullness, the reality of the Lisbon of our days, a mixture of cultures and races, of tradition and contemporaneity. Interestingly, this neighborhood remains today, the neighborhood in which dwells a large part of the immigrants of Lisbon, represented here by more than 50 nationalities, making it the most multicultural “barrio” of the capital.

A neighborhood that does not appear in the guides, and which was, until very recently “unknown” for tourists and even for many of its residents, has become in a record time, in one of the most active in the contemporary cultural scene, with its streets decorated with graffiti, shops of artisans, their associations, and a lot of music in the street when the weather is good. Instead of fad among the young residents, is today a district alternative and modern, without losing its more traditional side and the life of the neighborhood.

In this walking tour we take you to one of the liveliest districts of central Lisbon. We will walk through its medieval streets and alleys where the Muslim community was once confined.
You will have the opportunity to photograph some of the murals and graffiti that make Lisbon one of the European capitals of Urban Art.
Passarenos by the houses of historical fadistas that made of this district the cradle of the Fado, and we will take a ginjinha (liquor of ginja) in a typical tavern that witnessed the birth of this Portuguese musical art.

“We will dive” in this multicultural Lisbon neighborhood where there are shops, restaurants, and people from more than 50 different countries.
We will see how it was possible to combine the traditional side of this neighborhood with a more alternative and current facet. With many associations, handicraft shops, and with its great dynamism, this neighborhood with its small squares and small bars, remained until recently outside the itinerary of tourists, and even of the Lisbon. However, today it occupies a central place in what concerns the cultural scene of Lisbon.
