The waters of the Arade River are full of history since the pre-historic times. The word “Arade” comes from the phoenician, “Arvad”, that means “safe haven”. The Arade River had once great importance to connect Silves (the islamic capital of the Algarve between the 8th and 13th centuries) to the sea and it was the stage of many battles. In the 15th century, after the Christian conquest, it played an active part in the maritime voyages of the portuguese discoveries. For centuries, the Arade was the scenery of important merchant trades and was sailed by many cultures: Phoenicians, Romans, Vikings, Moors, among others. Ships came to carry minerals, oranges, cork, wood, figs, almonds, carobs, fish, salt, among other riches of the region.
