Forte de Peniche

During the New State Regime, a political prison was held in the space of the Peniche Fortress between 1934 and April 1974, housing several opponents of the political regime led by Oliveira Salazar and Marcelo Caetano.

Peniche was the most important fascist prison on the continent, usually aimed at political prisoners in prison and where an extremely severe prison regime was in force.
