El Santuario de Annapurna es una cuenca glaciar alta que se encuentra a 40 km directamente al norte de Pokhara. Esta meseta de forma ovalada se encuentra a una altitud de más de 4000 metros y está rodeada por un anillo de montañas, la cordillera de Annapurna, la mayoría de las cuales tiene más de 7000 metros. Con la única entrada, un estrecho valle entre los picos de Hiunchuli y Machapuchare, donde la escorrentía de los glaciares desemboca en el río Modi Khola, el Santuario no fue penetrado por forasteros hasta 1956.
Debido a las altas montañas en todos los lados, el Santuario Annapurna recibe solo 7 horas de luz solar por día a la altura del verano.
La combinación única de alturas y profundidades en la caminata de 5-7 días en el Santuario de Annapurna da lugar a una extraordinaria variedad de ecosistemas. Las laderas orientadas al sur están cubiertas de densas junglas tropicales de rododendro y bambú, mientras que las laderas orientadas al norte, bajo la sombra de la lluvia, tienen un clima más frío y más seco similar al de la cercana meseta tibetana.
