During the nineteenth century, the only buyer of salt was Brazil, which, having installed navies in its territory, decided to protect its production by imposing customs duties on imported salt. From the year 1887, it was almost impossible to sell the salt to Brazil, ruining the business of exploring the salt mines of Santa Maria.
