About Baixa Pombalina Lisboa

Baixa Pombalina, or, more simply put, Baixa, is a district of Lisbon and one of the most popular even, at least from a tourist point of view. The prestige of Baixa does not lie exclusively in its tourist reputation, but also in the fact it is one of the first and most faultless earthquake-resistant urban planning and construction examples in Europe. Indeed, the Baixa district was completely renovated after the massive cataclysmic incident in 1755 (earthquake, tsunami and fire), and it is to the first Marquis of Pombal (from where the name “Pombalina” derives), Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, that Baixa owes much of its present look and patrimony. The district enjoys a virtually central location, extending between the Tagus River and the Liberty Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade), neighboring at the same time on the Alfama district. It is replete with architectural marvels and aesthetically pleasing sets, being deemed the most elegant of all districts in Lisbon. Baixa is simultaneously the shopping and banking district of the city, but the bottom line is it stands out as one of the highest rated tourist hotspots in the capital of Portugal.

What People Are Saying

Merci Pierre"
Medieval Segway Tour In Lisbon Reviewed by: Charlène & Fanny
"We did the electric bike tour with was an amazing way to see Lisbon and a great way to learn the fascinating history. We would highly recommend this was the highlight of our trip to Lisbon."
"My friend and I booked an Up the Hills electric bike tour in Lisbon. Our guides Tony and David, were very knowledgeable about the city and dedicated to keeping us safe in street crossings. The electric bikes were a game changer on the very steep hills of Lisbon. We were a little nervous about going uphill intitially, but it was super easy! They took us to the highest point in Lisbon and the view was incredible. Tony asked at the beginning if our small group of 8 people wanted history, scenery, or a little of both and he catered to our preferences. Check in with Boost was a breeze and all the employees were incredibly friendly. Would recommend tours with Boost Urban Thrills to anyone!"
"Great experience, from help when I called to enquire about the eco tuk tour through to the excellent guide Hugo. Pre booked two hour tuk tour, with Hugo who clearly loves and is very proud of his city and wants to share his passion with his guests. We were on a cruise, this direct option is miles cheaper that on board booked tours and is straightforward, meet point in Rue Commercio is 10 mins walk from cruise terminal."
