La Piazza della Signoria ha sido el centro de la vida política en Florencia desde el siglo 14 con el prominente Palazzo Vecchio con vistas a la plaza. Fue el escenario de grandes triunfos, como el retorno de los Medici en 1530, así como la Fuego de las Vanidades instigadas por Savonarola, que fue quemada en la hoguera aquí en 1498 después de haber sido denunciada por la Inquisición como hereje. Una inscripción en el círculo de mármol en la plaza muestra el lugar donde fue quemado.

Las esculturas de la Piazza della Signoria son certezas con connotaciones políticas, muchas de las cuales son ferozmente contradictorias. El David (el original está en la Galleria dell'Accademia) por Miguel Ángel fue colocado fuera del Palazzo Vecchio como un símbolo del desafío de la República a los Medici tiránicos.

"We spent a lovely day with Lucy visiting a banana plantation, where we could ask all our questions about banana famring. Then we went to a center for agricultural development (fruit trees) where we saw many different kinds of fruit trees and learned about grafting methods. After that we visited a banana cooperative and saw how the bananas are delivered and packaged. Afterwards we headed to Henriques&Henriques for some wine tasting before going for lunch where we had traditional food from Madeira. To finish off the day we saw a farm with dairy and meat cattle. We really appreciated Lucy's vast knowledge about agriculture and Madeira in general. We had a great time and recommend the it to anyone who wants to do a tour that is a bit different from the other touristic tours. "
