Situé en face du Palais Royal, ce jardin de 1,6 hectare est l'une des attractions touristiques les plus célèbres de Madrid. Les jardins ont été conçus par José Bonaparte, qui voulait que les jardins mettent en évidence le Palacio et le Teatro Real. Depuis lors, ils ont subi d'importants travaux de restauration. Miguel de Oriol a dirigé les travaux de restauration les plus importants en 1997.

  Le statut équestre de Philippe IV se détache au centre de la place. Pietro Tacca l'a créé en 1960, suite aux calculs effectués par Galileo Galilei et flanqué d'une grande partie de la collection de statues de rois espagnols couronnés par le Palais Royal. Les jardins ont été conçus dans des formes géométriques afin de fournir de l'air et améliorer la façade du Palais Royal. En outre, ils sont situés au centre d'un groupe important et impressionnant, qui comprend non seulement le Palais, mais aussi le Couvent de La Encarnación.
