Situado frente al Palacio Real, este jardín de 1,6 hectáreas es una de las atracciones turísticas más famosas de Madrid. Los jardines fueron planeados por José Bonaparte, que quería que los jardines resaltaran el Palacio y el Teatro Real. Desde entonces, han sido objeto de importantes trabajos de restauración. Miguel de Oriol dirigió los trabajos de restauración más importantes en 1997.

  El estatuto ecuestre de Felipe IV se destaca en el centro de la Plaza. Pietro Tacca lo creó en 1960, siguiendo los cálculos realizados por Galileo Galilei y flanqueado por una gran parte de la colección de estatuas de reyes españoles coronadas por el Palacio Real. Los jardines han sido diseñados en formas geométricas para proporcionar aire y realzar la fachada del Palacio Real. Además, están ubicados en el centro de un grupo importante e impresionante, que incluye no solo el Palacio, sino también el Convento de La Encarnación.
