Localizado em frente ao Palácio Real, este jardim de 1.6 hectares é uma das atracções turísticas mais famosas de Madrid. Os jardins foram planejados por José Bonaparte, que queria os jardins para destacar o Palácio e o Teatro Real. Desde então, eles foram submetidos a importantes trabalhos de restauração. Miguel de Oriol dirigiu o trabalho de restauração mais importante em 1997.

  A estátua equestre de Philip IV se destaca no centro da Plaza. Pietro Tacca criou-o em 1960, seguindo os cálculos realizados por Galileo Galilei e flanqueado por uma grande parte da coleção de estátuas de reis espanhóis coroados pelo Palácio Real. Os Jardins foram projetados em formas geométricas para fornecer ar e melhorar a fachada do Palácio Real. Além disso, estão localizados no centro de um grupo importante e impressionante, que inclui não apenas o Palácio, mas também o Convento de La Encarnación.
