10 DAYS KILIMANJARO TREKKING VIA LEMOMOSHO ROUTE (8DAYS IN THE MOUNTAIN)
Lemosho route is the most dramatic and beautiful route up to Kilimanjaro. It is the most remote and getting popularity now days which traverse some of Kilimanjaro most striking and least traveled landscapes, including the base of Kibo Peak’s and dramatic south-facing glaciers. This route has added benefits of trekking across the Shira Plateau a World Heritage Site trekking 180 degrees around Kilimanjaro and also this route allowed plenty of time to acclimatize to the high altitude and this is the key to your safety, comfort, enjoyment and success while trekking mountain Kilimanjaro. Lemosho route can be climb for 6 days, 7 days and 8 days; we strongly recommend 8 days for more time of acclimatization and get use to the altitude before summit
Accommodation
You will spend 2 nights in Moshi, one night before and one night after trekking. The room in the hotel is to be shared with 2 persons in each room. During the trekking, you will spend your nights in a mobile tent in Mount Kilimanjaro. One tent is to be shared with 2 persons each. Personal room and tent can be available based on a personal request.

DETAILED ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrivals day
You will meet Eastland Adventures representative who will drive you from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to your hotel in Moshi to rest for a while and later meet your guide for gear checking and briefing about the mountain. Furthermore, the guide will go through the group camping gear and demonstrate the use and operation of all equipment especially emergency oxygen cylinder and pulse ox-meter, your guide also will explain signs and symptoms of various mountain sicknesses which might happen while trekking.

Day 2: Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp 9,100feet/2650m
After breakfast in the morning, you will drive approximately for 2 to 3 hours to the Londorosi gate where you will do registration and get entrance permit then you will drive again for 1 hour to Lemosho starting point where you will get off from the jeep and stop for picnic lunch. After lunch, you will meet all the crews including rest of the guides, cooks, and porters and your hike will start through crossing rain forest for about 2 to 3 hours to cover the distance of 4.5 miles /7kilometers to Mti Mkubwa camp. On the way, you will see a lot of beautiful flowers like impatiens Kilimanjaro and if you are lucky you might see black and white Colobus monkeys and other forest wildlife.

Day 3: Hike to Shira 1 camp 11,500feet/3650m
Today, it will be one of your beautiful hikes for about 6 to 7 hours including lunch stop to cover distance of 4.5 miles / 7kilometers and after 2 hours walk, you will be in the moorland zone on the west side of the Shira plateaus where you will be able to see old lava flows and you will enjoy the sun and walk slowly to get more breaks to acclimatize until you arrive at the camp for overnight rest.

Day 4: Hike to Moir Hut 13,800feet/4200m
Today, you will hike for about 4 to 6 hours to cover the distance of 5.6 miles/ 9Kilometers you will also cross the middle of Shira plateau, a world heritage site as your picnic lunch at fishers point. After lunch, you will walk for 1 to 2 hours hiking through moorland zone and arriving in the beautiful overnight camp located at the base of a massive lava flow.

Day 5: Hike to Barranco Camp 13,044feet/3940m
Today, you will keep walking in Alpine desert for 5.6 miles/ 9Kilometers for about 6 to 8 hours. You will start by climbing over steep hills and very few rocks, then steady uphill climb to the lava tower 15190feet/4600m ( Lava towers is 133feet/ 150m high volcanic plug that just outside of the mountain) and stop for lunch around noon. From this point, some people might start to feel a mild headache due to the altitude change. From lava tower, you will descend for about 2 hours through dust and rock trail to have overnight rest at Barranco Camp.

Day 6: Hike to Karanga Camp 13,106feet/3995m
Today is a short day for 4 to 6 hours to cover the distance of 3.7 miles / 5Kilometers and you will start by scrambling up the great Barranco wall for about 1 to 2 hours. In this wall, some section will be steep forcing you to use hands to reach and maneuver yourself around rock boulders like rock climbing, though it is not as challenging as rock climbing. At the top of the wall, you can see Barranco valley and the campsite where you spent the night before. You will also walk up and down to Karanga valley which is the last water point on the mountain and on top of the ridge; it will be your campsite where you will have hot lunch and overnight stay.

Day 7: Hike to Barafu Camp 15,330feet/4600m
Today, you will have another walking of 2.5 miles/ 4Kilometers for 3 to 5 hours in steep uphill with a lot of boulders and shattered rock crossing an upper Alpine desert. You will go through a steep ridge until you reach a rocky section which is more scrambling for about an hour and a half. Your next camp will be on a large rocky area with steep faces and you will have earlier dinner and sleep earlier because you will have to wake up in the middle of the night for the summit.

Day 8: Summit to Uhuru (19,340feet/5895m) and descend to Mweka hut 10,065feet/3100m
You will wake up around 11:00pm and have some tea and snacks that will warm you for the summit. You will start your summit around 12:00am by start it with steep rocks for about 2 to 3 hours and then you will start crossing zigzag area and keep moving to crater rim and finally Stella point 18800feet/ 5657m on around 06:00am. At Stella point, you will meet with other hikers from other route and join them heading to Uhuru peak and you will be able to see the sunrise on your way or at the summit. Once you arrive at the summit, you will stay for 10 to 15 minutes for pictures and sightseeing and descend down via the same trail for about 3 hours to Barafu Camp for rest, brunch, and descend to Mweka Hut. The distances from the base camp to the summit is 6.2miles/ 10Kilometers round trip.

Day 9: Descend from Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate 5,380feet/1640m
Today after breakfast, you will meet your Eastland Adventures Kilimanjaro crew for group pictures and Kilimanjaro songs. Afterward, you will start descending down via rain forest for about 3 to 4 hours to cover the distance of 6.2 miles/ 10Kilometers also if you lucky you can see blue monkeys and black and white Colobus monkeys as well. At Mweka Gate, you will sign out in Kilimanjaro National Park log book and the guide will collect a certificate for those who manage successful summit and then drive you to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and Kilimanjaro beer.

Day 10: Departures day/Join us for Safaris
We will drive you back to Kilimanjaro International airport (JRO) for departures, or join us for Safaris
Note: Eastland Adventures recommends training such as cycling, jogging, and long walking with intend shoes for the climb while carrying 5 to 8 kilograms/ 17pound backpack

When are the Best Months?
The best times to climb Kilimanjaro tend to be the warmest and driest months – End of December, January, February and beginning of March, June, July, August and September are also good months. However, temperatures and weather are quite unpredictable, and can change drastically based on the time of day and altitude. It’s best to avoid the long rainy season, from the end of March to early June, and the short rainy season, from November through the beginning of December.
What about Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness is potentially fatal. However, most climbers will get some form of mild acute mountain sickness (AMS) while on the mountain. Our guide will monitor you closely during the duration of your climb. However, you should be aware of the symptoms of mild, moderate and severe AMS, and you must inform your guide of any symptoms immediately. Never try to hide your symptoms in order to continue climbing. There is always the possibility that the impact of AMS will ultimately sabotage your summit attempt.
