It’s impossible to experience the country without visiting its North – Porto! The name of the city instantly engraves in memory of each tourist and is associated with “PORTO”, a noble “drink of noble gentlemen”, with football and with the country name… This city attracts with the special atmosphere, calls, intrigues and remains a big riddle — what is in Porto? To receive an irrefragable answer to the most asked question by tourists, we go to the Northern Capital to see all with our own eyes. It will be an unforgettable tour which will exceed any expectations and will leave indelible impression — you will leave a piece of your soul in Porto.
Our acquaintance with Porto will begin with a visit of the oldest trading house of Graham’s port. How port wine is produced? What success secret does it have? Why is it so popular among the foreigners and has been the hallmark of the country for a long time? There is the museum of a trading house and wine cellars where the port wine aroma is felt in the air. There are white, ruby and amber port wines in barrels, as well as the port wine preferred by sir Winston Churchill and other celebrities. We will visit a private family collection where vintage wines, the most rare and expensive category of port wine, are matured. A final part is, of course, a tasting, and acquaintance with a noble drink and an opportunity to purchase the pleasant wine at the production prices. Further we will go down to the Dour river on which the city of Porto is located. Amazing views, the most beautiful embankment and one more small journey by a river ship! We will pass under 5 bridges which connect two river banks of the Dour and we will see the well-known Maria Pia Bridge which was built by a Gustav Eiffel’s project. Porto has to be seen from the river: the fortifications which once surrounded all the city, the monastery of Augustinians with round church where now barracks are situated, Ribeira — the embankment with the motley lodges where fishermen and seamen lived for a long time. After a ship, we will visit “golden church” of the city of Porto. It is a Gothic church of Franciscans for the decoration of which 60 kg of gold was spent. If it will be desired, it is possible to go down to catacombs, the burial of the only kind in the country. Near church there is an Exchange building which was built on the place of the burned-down monastery of Franciscans. We will see the Henrique the Seafarer Square and house where the most famous prince of the country was born, the Cathedral of the 12th century where the historical wedding of his parents was held, and the station of Saint Benedict which is decorated with 22000 ceramic tiles or “azulejo”. The railway station is on the list of the most beautiful stations of the world and it is one of the most visited places of the city of Porto. We will go the central square with imposing buildings of 18 — 19 centuries and Avenue of the Allies, where the life of the residents of Porto is lived.
On the hill, there is a city symbol, a Clerkish tower, the best sample of the Portuguese baroque towers. Now it is used as the observation deck. From 75-meter height the magnificent view on the city and the river Dour opens. Near a tower there is a bookstore of Lello well-known in the whole world, which every tourist should visit.
In free time you will walk along the briskest shopping street Santa Catarina with numerous shops where leather footwear, bags, clothes, sweets, tea, honey, olive oil, fish and canned food is sold. For lunch, we advise to order a local dish called “Fransezinha”, i.e. “Frenchwoman” which is simply adored by the residents of Porto. It will be a busy day and immersion to another world, to “another” Portugal. The Northern Capital is the city of bridges, the invincible city which surprised, surprises and will surprise still many-many tourists!
