Nuns Valley – Monte – Madeira Island

Isolated from the rest of the island, lies the Nuns Valley, a caldron surrounded by lava rock a perfect contrast. Leaving Funchal to Pico dos Barcelos one of Madeiras unique viewpoints. We then make our way up to Eira do Serrado where the chestnut trees and eucalyptus are seen at every angle. At 1094m above sea level, (if weather permits) you will be able to see the view to the Nuns Valley, place used by nuns in the 15th century to hide from the constant pirate attacks. Try Madeiras only chestnut cake and biscuits and our liquors. Lost stop is at Monte one of Madeira´s old touristic stops with a visit to the church of our Lady of Monte, our protector and saint patriot of the Island. Monte also offers an incredible view over our capital Funchal for those who want a little adventure and included in this tour is our toboggan ride, the old transport method used in the past, sleigh ride pushed by two men through one of capitals beautiful roads. This half day of 4 hours takes place every Monday and Thursdays mornings.
