Welcome to Tavira

The municipality of Tavira has a useful area of 611 km2, being 80% composed of saw and barrocal. The coastline has a sea front of 18 kilometers of fine sand beaches, located in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. The history of Tavira is lost in time, and the excavations done on the site show the presence of the Phoenicians and other ancient peoples. The local architecture has marks of the Muslim occupation, and is a Portuguese city from 1520. Tavira has many churches, convents, hermitages and chapels, and is crossed by the rivers Gilão and Séqua. It has very pleasant temperatures and some of the calmer beaches of the Algarve, besides old monuments and very charming streets.

Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Portugal is spring season which starts in February to find hills bedecked in seasonal flowers and almond groves awash with pretty pink blossom. Of course, autumn is another best time to visit Portugal, especially for walkers and cyclists, as temperatures are still warm but crowds are a lot less.
